Primary Metal

Our Primary Metal business unit consists of smelters that use alumina to produce aluminium. We own, operate or have interests in 23 aluminium smelters and 12 power generating plants, nine of them hydroelectric. 

We have:

• The industry's largest share of low-cost production capacity
• The most advanced smelting technology
• The ability to generate about half of our own power needs
• Equipment sales, engineering services and aluminium trading operations
• Anode and cathode production facilities
• Aluminium fluoride plants

Our smelters span the world and are located in:

• Norway
• Oman

• US

New build projects are planned in Australia, South Africa and Malaysia.
