New programme boosts sustainable Habitat projects in Canada
Habitat for Humanity International helps families in need around the globe to build affordable homes. Rio Tinto Alcan has long been a supporter of the organisation, either through corporate programmes or volunteer employee efforts.
In Canada, we have updated our assistance for these worthwhile projects with a new programme that emphasises safe and sustainable building practices.
Announced in early May, Rio Tinto Alcan Sustainable Homes replaces the Alcan Builds on Recycling programme and will award a total of C$200,000 each year.
"This serves as a visible demonstration of Rio Tinto Alcan's commitment to the protection of the environment, our investment in the communities we serve, and our work in supporting the elimination of poverty housing in Canada," says Corey Copeland, Senior vice president, Communications and External Relations.
The programme offers opportunities for Habitat for Humanity Canada (HFHC) affiliates to share best practices in sustainable construction and inspire each other to raise the bar as sustainability leaders. It represents a tighter alignment of our corporate goals with HFHC's increasing emphasis on homes built to higher energy and environmental standards. Individual homes that are more energy-efficient can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to three tonnes per year. Additionally, energy-efficient homes reduce homeowner costs by up to 30 per cent, saving each family approximately C$500 each year in utility costs.
Affiliates can apply via the programme website at http://www.riotintoalcansustainablehomes.com/ and winners will be selected by a panel of HBHC and Rio Tinto Alcan representatives along with outside consultants.
